Gartner Hype Cycle

  • A phrase originally coined by Gartner and widely used in marketing circles
  • A graphic representation of the maturity, adoption and social application of new technologies
  • Consists of five phase:
    1. Technology Trigger is the event that generates initial significant press and interest
    2. Peak of Inflated Expectations is the frenzy of publicity that generates over-enthusiasm and unrealistic expectations. This phase contains more failures than successful applications of the technology
    3. Trough of Disillusionment is the result of failures to meet expectations and the technology becomes unfashionable.  The press abandons the technology in this phase
    4. Slope of Enlightenment is when businesses continue to experiment and understand the benefits and practical application of the technology
    5. Plateau of Productivity is when the benefits of the technology become widely demonstrated and accepted. The technology evolves to stable second and third generations
