Navigation Types

Global Navigation

  • Navigation that is consistent across the entire site
  • Usually allows easy access to major parts of the site
  • Examples include main menus and bottom menus displayed horizontally across each page

Local Navigation

  • Navigation that allows people to move around in the part of the site where they are currently located
  • Examples include breadcrumbs and side menus within a site section

Contextual Navigation

  • Navigation that assocites related pages
  • Examples include internal links in rich text fields and "more info" links

Supplemental Navigation

  • Any additional navigation tools
  • Examples include site maps and search pages
